What is the mole excision procedure?
Mole excision, “nevi” in medical terms, involves a surgical procedure performed by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon to remove a lesion with an increased potential to turn into melanoma, or one that the patient finds unsightly.
When should moles (nevi) be excised?
There are 3 situations in which a mole has an indication for surgical excision:
- It is clinically and dermatoscopically suspicious. That is, it is asymmetric, shows several colors, has an irregular border or has grown faster recently.
- It is constantly traumatised by clothing or during daily activities, which sustains a chronic inflammatory process.
- It is bothersome aesthetically because of its location or the presence of hairs.

How is a mole excision carried out at the ArtMedica clinic?

The process of excising a mole at the ArtMedica clinic is carried out as follows:
- Initial consultation: during this, the dermatologist examines the entire body surface clinically and dermatoscopically. The doctor decides whether one or more moles need to be excised and explains to the patient how the surgical excision will proceed. The patient also receives instructions on what is allowed or not allowed before the procedure, such as avoiding smoking, alcohol consumption or stopping certain medications.
- Pre-operative preparation: disinfecting the skin, the area where the procedure will take place is thoroughly disinfected with antiseptic solutions and isolated with a sterile drape. Local anesthesia, injectable local anesthesia is applied to the skin next to the mole to be excised.
- Excising the mole: this is done with a scalpel, removing both the mole and a few millimetres of healthy tissue around it to ensure complete excision with safety margins. The post-operative defect is closed with sutures. The wound is then disinfected again and a sterile dressing is applied.
- Histopathology examination: the excised specimen is fixed in formaldehyde and sent to a pathology service for histopathology assessment, which determines whether the lesion is benign or malignant, or its detailed type.
- Post-operative care: the patient receives instructions on proper care of the post-operative wound at home.
- Post-operative check-up: the follow-up appointment takes place to remove the sutures (if they are non-absorbable), to check how the treated area is healing and to discuss the histopathology result. Based on this, the doctor sets a further course of action, which may involve long-term monitoring.
